NEW DELHI: The monthly stipend for interning doctors from government medical colleges (GMC) in Maharashtra has been raised to Rs 18,000 from Rs 11,000. This decision follows persistent demands from interning doctors, who argued that Maharashtra had the lowest stipends.
Effective February 2024, this raise applies to foreign medical graduates (FMG) completing their MBBS abroad and interning in Maharashtra’s GMCs.
In July 2023, the Association of State Medical Interns (ASMI) in Maharashtra penned a letter to the state government, urging an augmentation of the stipend for intern doctors. ASMI highlighted the stagnation of monthly stipends in GMCs despite escalating MBBS fees. The association pointed out comparably higher stipends in other states as evidence.
Earlier, the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) called off their strike after discussions with Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, who accepted their demands.
Representing resident doctors in government colleges, MARD had initiated the strike over unresolved issues. They secured a promise from the state government to increase the stipend by Rs 10,000 immediately.
Furthermore, MARD demanded the prompt regularization of stipend payments and clearance of all pending stipends and arrears. The Maharashtra government also pledged to ensure timely stipend payments going forward, directing the finance department to allocate necessary funds monthly.
MARD’s requests included expediting Public Welfare Department (PWD) projects for hostel repairs and new constructions. They urged for temporary accommodations until new infrastructure is established.
