Popular Front of India (PFI) is an Indian Muslim political organisation, that was formed to counter Hindutva groups and engages in a radical and exclusivist style of Muslim minority politics. It was founded in 2006 with the merger of the Karnataka Forum for Dignity (KFD) and the National Development Front (NDF).

Popular Front of India (PFI) was established in the year 2006 in Kerala after merging National Development Front (NDF) from Kerala,After the merger of the National Development Front (NDF) from Kerala, the Forum for Dignity from Karnataka, and the MNP from Tamil Nadu, the Popular Front of India (PFI) was founded in Kerala in 2006. Several studies have shown that PFI has been implicated in supporting terrorism, money laundering, and the radicalization of Muslim youngsters in the nation.

Additionally, it is said that after the terror group SIMI was outlawed in India, its members joined PFI. The PFI has been charged with promoting racial unrest and fomenting animosity from the very beginning. The Kerala High Court received an affidavit from the state government in 2014 claiming that PFI activists were to blame for 106 communal incidents and 27 political murders in Kerala.

What is the work of PFI?

The PFI, which emerged following the ban on the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), has positioned itself as a group that fights for the rights of minorities, Dalits, and other marginalized groups. It has frequently targeted these parties in Karnataka for alleged anti-people policies of the Congress, BJP, and JDS. The important point to note here is that these mainstream parties accuse each other of conspiring with the PFI to gain Muslim support during elections.

Funding of Anti-CAA Protests

On 1 January 2020 Union law minister Mr.Ravi Shankar Prasad stated that PFI may have played a part in violence surrounding some protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA).Enforcement Directorate (ED) has also informed Ministry of Home Affairs in its report submitted to Home Ministry and is investigating a Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) probe. However PFI has denied any link with any protest against the CAA in the country and called it a cheap campaign against it.

The PFI was formed in 2007 when three Muslim organizations in southern India merged: the National Democratic Front in Kerala, the Karnataka Forum for Dignity, and the Manitha Neethi Pasarai in Tamil Nadu.
