WhatsApp Introduces New Safety Feature for Group Messaging: How to Change Group Privacy Settings

Meta-owned messaging app WhatsApp has rolled out a new safety feature designed to help users stay safe in group messaging. This feature aims to provide users with more control and transparency when added to groups by unknown people.

New Safety Feature Details

This new feature, called the “context card,” is gradually being rolled out to all WhatsApp users. It provides important information whenever users are added to an unfamiliar group, such as who added them, when the group was created, and who created it. This information helps users decide whether the group is relevant and if they want to stay or leave.

Previously, in 2019, WhatsApp introduced settings to control who can add users to groups. The new context card enhances this control, making group interactions safer and more transparent.

How to Change Group Privacy Settings

To enhance your privacy and control who can add you to groups, follow these steps to adjust your WhatsApp group privacy settings:

Step 1: Open WhatsApp on your device.

Step 2: Tap on the ‘More menu’ icon, typically represented by three dots, located at the top right corner of the screen.

Step 3: From the dropdown menu, select ‘Settings’ to open the settings menu.

Step 4: Tap on ‘Privacy’ to access privacy-related options.

Step 5: Select ‘Groups’ and choose one of the following options:

  • Everyone: Anyone can add you to groups.
  • My Contacts: Only your contacts can add you to groups.
  • My Contacts Except: Only your contacts can add you to groups, except those you specifically exclude.
Benefits of the New Feature

“This is particularly helpful if you just met someone or a group of people, and haven’t yet saved them in your contacts–or it can help confirm whether or not it’s a group you know or want to be in,” WhatsApp stated. This added layer of information helps users make informed decisions about joining groups, enhancing overall security and user experience on the platform.

With the new context card feature and the ability to adjust group privacy settings, WhatsApp continues to prioritize user safety and privacy. By following the steps outlined above, users can ensure they have the desired control over their group interactions, making their WhatsApp experience safer and more enjoyable.
