What is the purpose of the Department of Telecommunications’ free bot Malware removal programs?

The security of users’ devices is becoming increasingly important due to the rise in malware attacks and frauds. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has released a number of free bot removal programmes to address this issue and help people protect their mobile devices. To spread awareness, the government is constantly contacting individuals via SMS messages.

How is the government spreading awareness about cybersecurity through SMS messages?

You might have recently gotten a text message from the government saying, “Stay Cyber Safe! The Government of India, through CERT-In, advises downloading the “Free Bot Removal Tool” at csk.gov.in to safeguard your device from botnet infections and malware.

The purpose of this SMS is to serve as a reminder to users to stay safe online and to take preventative measures to protect their devices from malware and botnet threats.

The Cyber Swachhta Kendra webpage now offers people access to free malware detection tools, the ministry announced. Under the direction of the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), this portal—also known as the Botnet Cleaning and Malware Analysis Centre—operates together with Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and antivirus companies. Users can secure their devices and systems with the help of the website’s information and tools.

This initiative’s main goal is to provide a secure online environment by strongly discovering and detecting botnet problems in India.

What is a botnet infection?

A network of electronic devices, such as smartphones or computers, that have contracted the “bot” kind of malware is known as a botnet. Malware provides hackers power over infected computers after a device has been compromised and joined the botnet. This power gives them the ability to engage in a variety of malicious behaviours, such as sending spam, preventing incoming and outgoing texts and calls, and even accessing private data like usernames, passwords, and net banking information.

You risk having a bot infect your device if you:

  • open a malicious email attachment
  • Choosing a malicious link from an email or website
  • Download a file from a questionable website.
  • Use an unsecured public Wi-Fi network.

How can users check if their device has a botnet infection and remove the malware and bots?

To find out whether your device has a botnet infection or to remove the malware and bots,

  • Go to the “Security Tools” option on the CSK website at www.csk.gov.in.
  • Decide which antivirus provider’s bot removal Tool you want to use.
  • To download the tool, click the “Download” button.
  • Download one of the free bot removal tools for Windows, such as eScan Antivirus, K7 Security, or Quick Heal, from the list.
  • Users of Android: Search for and download the “eScan CERT-IN Bot Removal” tool or “M-Kavach 2” created by C-DAC Hyderabad from the Google Play Store.
  • After downloading, launch the app on your phone or tablet.
  • The App will check your computer for malware and clean up any infections it finds.

In addition to the tools for removing bots, the CSK portal also provides other security programs like “USB Pratirodh” and “AppSamvid.” To improve their security, users have the choice to download these programs.

To control the use of portable storage devices, such as phones and pen drives, “USB Pratirodh” is a desktop function. Users must enter a username and password each time a new USB device is attached in order to be authorized. This Tool also encrypts data, changes read/write permissions, and analyses USB drives for viruses.

What are some of the free bot removal tools available for Windows users?

For Windows users, there is “AppSamvid,” an application that restricts the operating system to only running approved files. It enables users to make trustworthy Java files and executables lists. The software can also be password-protected by users. ‘AppSamvid’ guards the computer against malware such as viruses and trojans.
