Early Life and Education:

Rishi Sunak was born in Southampton, England, on May 12, 1980, to Indian parents. His father, Yashvir, was a general practitioner, while his mother, Usha, worked as a pharmacist. Sunak grew up in Southampton and attended Winchester College, a prestigious independent school in Hampshire.

He went on to study politics, philosophy, and economics (PPE) at the University of Oxford, graduating with a First Class degree in 2001. After completing his undergraduate studies, he went on to study for an MBA at Stanford University in the United States.

Professional Career:

After completing his MBA, Rishi Sunak worked for Goldman Sachs, a global investment banking firm, where he focused on corporate finance and mergers and acquisitions. He then moved on to work for other investment firms, including The Children’s Investment Fund Management and Theleme Partners.

In 2015, Sunak left his job in finance and entered politics, running as a Conservative Party candidate for the parliamentary seat of Richmond (Yorks). He won the seat in the 2015 general election, defeating the incumbent Liberal Democrat MP, and was re-elected with an increased majority in the 2017 general election.

During his time in parliament, Sunak was appointed as a junior minister in the Ministry of Housing, Communities, and Local Government, where he was responsible for local government finance. He later moved to the Treasury, where he served as the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Local Government.

In 2019, Sunak was appointed as the Chief Secretary to the Treasury, the second-most senior position in the department. In this role, he was responsible for overseeing public spending and played a key role in the government’s preparations for Brexit.

Chancellor of the Exchequer:

In February 2020, Rishi Sunak was appointed as the Chancellor of the Exchequer, succeeding Sajid Javid. His appointment came as a surprise to many, as he had only been in parliament for four years and had never held a Cabinet position before.

As Chancellor, Sunak has played a key role in the government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has had a significant impact on the UK economy.
